REVIEW: GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES Encores! Cast Recording

Sony Masterworks just released the brand new recording of Jule Styne's GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. The all star cast includes Megan Hilty (Smash) in the role made famous by Marilyn Monroe, Rachel York (Anything Goes National Tour), Aaron Lazar, and more!

Overall, this recording is a great preservation of a gorgeous score, but nothing ground breaking. The orchestra is heavily featured, and is featured performing well.

While the first question one asks is: "How is Hilty?" After her high profile turn in SMASH, all eyes were on her and her performance. My verdict: meh. She sounds fantastic as one would expect, but her performance is nothing spectacular.

The standout for me is Rachel York, who I was unfamiliar with. She sounds brilliant every time she sings. She makes me want to go see the Anything Goes national tour, just for her.

If you love musical theatre, there is no reason you wouldn't enjoy this album. If you are looking for the best recording you've ever heard, I'd look elsewhere.

  1. I'm going to see the Anything Goes tour in a few weeks when it comes to Nashville. I'm excited to see Rachel York. And the production since I missed it's run on Broadway.

  2. See I saw the original with Sutton and Laura, so I really would only see it for York.
